V. Vale, his RE/Search newsletter, just received. Always a source of great, up-to-date countercultural art information. He keeps the flame of J.G. Ballard studies alive, for one thing…Vale into the punk thing majorly also – mention of the recent Malcolm McLaren death – myself, not really into punk or the Sex Pistols, but I appreciate Vale’s appreciation. Just talked with him yesterday about a small photo of Jimmy Page and William Burroughs together, by Charles Gatewood, that I want to buy. He said he’s got to get it to his Romolo offices in North Beach so I can pick it up there.
A Care2 Action Alert also received, about the upcoming expiration of the Climate Treaty – this will leave the world without an international agreement about what to do about the changing atmosphere. I really need to think more about this and other global issues. At least I’m on the Care2 list so such matters come to my attention in some peripheral manner. Hardly vote, but make eco-smart daily life choices.
Macrobiotic Guide Newsletter - am on their list as well – good solid nutritional information. Tho’ I lean towards the David Wolfe all raw way, and not the cooked macrobiotic vegan path. Some connection by the MGN with Nexus, the alternative news magazine, which I see on occasion.
Rave – the Wickedpedia entry. Led to this due to a friend’s interest in such events – he deejays and has provided music for these gatherings. Tho’ he just told me the current scene is certainly not like it was back a few years ago, when the parties were massive. Not that way any more due to authoritarian crackdown, it’s likely. I’m not one to go to raves, but I heard about ‘em, and saw flyers. I think they’re still happening here and there, but probably not at the size previously. Have heard of a general police curtailment of nightlife in general south of Market.
Donovan, the great musician. Looked him up for some reason in Wickedpedia. Did I just hear one of his songs somewhere, and that triggered the information search? Like so much of his music. Have read his autobiography – very inspired, as I recall, by American countercultural texts of the Fifties, the Beatnik material.
“Season of the Witch” – well, I think it was this Donovan song that got me thinking of him – Vanilla Fudge’s version, maybe, or the Hole/Courtney Love one. I like things witchy, and like this tune much. Wickedpedia says it came out in late 1966 and ran nearly five minutes, unusual for a time when most pop/rock numbers averaged about half that, so I guess it was one of the first of those longer songs that began appearing later in the Sixties. The entry also says Joan Jett covered it about six years ago on an album called Naked – that’s one I’d for sure seek out, for that track alone.
Noel Coward – see John Kenrick’s compilation of quotes from the playwright/composer/director/actor/singer called “Noel Coward 101” – must admit don’t know a whole lot about him, but the other day Facebooked a friend with Coward’s “Keir Dullea, gone tomorrow” put down.
